The journalist role is to produce content for The Melbourne Anglican and associated channels, to support the diocese’s mission of Making the Word of God fully known. The Journalist role is part of the Communications and Media department of the diocese. If you are an experienced Journalist who enjoys writing compelling stories and taking a creative approach to storytelling across multiple platforms (print, social media and digital platforms) – then this could be the role for you!
You will be responsible for:
Producing content for The Melbourne Anglican, covering the life of churches within the diocese and faith-based news more broadly.
Developing a network of contacts within the church and showing initiative in generating story ideas.
Sourcing and pitching fresh and compelling content ideas, gleaned from a range of sources.
Using strong writing skills to break down complex subjects into content that is easy to understand, engaging to read, and broadly accessible.
Creating high-quality, creative digital content that will help The Melbourne Anglican engage existing audiences and reach new audiences.
Generating, refining and realising creative ways of presenting stories in visual and audio media formats.
Assisting with proofreading and possessing the ability to edit own work to ensure error-free copy.
Working with other Journalists and the Editor to ensure comprehensive coverage of issues affecting Anglicans in Melbourne.
Generating, refining and developing story ideas with the team.
To be successful in this role you will have:
A Degree in journalism or similar work experience.
The ability to show genuine interest and enthusiasm for the readers you serve, and their priorities.
The ability to produce accurate, concise and engaging copy, covering a range of soft and hard news issues with nuance, and respect for differing views.
A good understanding of website content management, social media, of the way news stories are presented online including experience with digital news publishing systems.
A strong grasp of grammar, spelling and organisational style.
The ability to source and maintain contacts across a community.
The ability to work as part of a team.
Well-developed interpersonal skills and experience in dealing with people at all levels;
Well-developed time management and organisational skills.
Proficiency in all aspects of Microsoft Office and experience in use of office networked IT systems.
Familiarity with the Anglican Church and a practical understanding of its ethos would be ideal. Being an active member of an Australian church would be a significant advantage.
